Based on what you are reading in chapter 7 "School Days," how is Reavis like Permian? How is it different? Which high school would you rather attend and why?
I think reavis is nothing like permian because here in reavis teachers actually care. Its not like in chapter seven how teachers don't really care about you they just talk or sometimes don't say anything and just give you work without even teaching you how to do the work. In chapter seven it says around part one how teachers only talk for like ten minutes and then give you work we'll i think that's not teching.
Okay but if you continue to read then you would find out that one of the players at Permian actually does care about his education. But I do agree on how you say that Reavis teachers do care.
Permian is a type of school that just doesn't care about students all they care about is winning the football season. Also how they named a girl the book bitch i think it's avious that some teacher or principle should do something about it. The high school i'd rather attend is reavis because they want you to graduate and get good grades rather you play sports or not.
Reavis students and Permian students are similar because many students from both schools walk from class to class not caring about what they are learning. Both believe that "they are never going to use this". There are a select handful of students who are eager to learn and actually enjoy school, but a majority just don't care.
I would agree with Martha on how she says mostly the kids walk class to class. I think it is true in a way but also that is true to that some kids do care and like me i don't go to class thinking I'm not gonna learn something i don't need because why would we be in school then.
Honestly, it might be sad to admit but, this is true. I believe most of everything Martha said is right. Its up to the students themselves to actually do well in school.
I agree with Martha. Not many kids here really show how important education is to them. There is a good group of kids that care about where they end up and hpw they do in school. But then you get those other kids that just say "Who cars?" and throw their hands up when school gets too tough.
I agree with Marta on the point that students at both schools are apathetic when it comes to learning, but the students also differ in many ways. Here at Reavis at least we're offered an opportunity to learn. The the teachers put fourth considerable effort to raise test scores and make the learning experience more interesting. At Permian the only focus is on football and shortcuts are often taken to ensure the football program is successful.
i agree with Wilson, at Permian the only focus is on the football program. i think academics is more important than sports and at reavis i think they are about equal.
I agree with Wilson. Permian High would do any so its football program would be successful. They spent thousands of dollars building a stadium and when they would charter jets. There school didn't have a computer but the coaches had a new apple computer to make sure they could work with the plays as efficiently as possible.
To go along with what Daniel said, everyone is given the same opportunity and for the students not take the chance to be involved then its their fault.
I agree with Martha about the students at this school. Some the athletes in this school don't care what they do in school. All they care about is their sport. There is some care in school in Reavis, but it is not s big care for school. There are a select handful of students who like school.
I actually disagree. I believe that if a student is unmotivated in academics it is just that specific individual. I think that if they are lazy then it wouldn't matter if they were an athlete or not;they would be lazy regardless. As for them caring about their sports only, I see that as an excuse for their pure stupidity and lathargic attitudes. Academics at Reavis are not correlated to athletics in my opinion.
I didn't say that all athletes are like that. There are a few that are like that. They don't appreciate what the teachers at Reavis do for the student. The teachers actually try their best to give students opportunity to bring up their grades during homerooms and RAM. Some student and student athletes just don't care.
I also agree with Martha about Reavis students and Permian students complaining about their learning experience in school; some of them like Martha said "there never going to use this" complain all year, Instead of actually doing something. On the other hand sudents from both schools take the advantage of learning something and if their in a sport, Actually putting less effort than in thier academics.
Reavis and Permian are two big different schools. Both with academics and Sports. At our school some kids care about there academics. I dont think we have kids that are way to good in sports that they can just get special treatment and not do any work like boobie. I wouldnt want to goto Permian because if i want to get an education that would be the wrong place to go. But if i was a good football player i would be there.
Both schools have the academics and sports but I think Reavis is neutral between there sports and academics. Some teachers care some don't, the coaches have been trying to get more people to come out but Burbank and Stickney just aren't the die hard city's for football like Permian. I would like to see a school that cared that much about there football team and a city that would empty out into the community high school's game. I think it would help the players knowing majority of the neighbor hood is cheering you on. I would still rather attend Reavis because the help that you can get from the teachers on anything you want you probably couldn't find in Permian.
If I could choose a school between Permian and Reavis, it would defiantly be Reavis. I would choose Reavis because the teachers here care about their students. The whole Reavis staff cares about the students. There is not anything you can do if a student doesn’t care, they are failing themselves. As a teacher you don’t fail students because you don’t like them. Unlike Permian, you don’t pass students that are athletes, just because they are. You have to earn you’re grade at Reavis. We may not have the “Mojo” spirit but, we do have school spirit. That’s something I like about Reavis is the spirit that the students and staff shows towards all extra-curriculum activites.
Reavis is nothing like Permian because the teachers here do an excellent job teaching. I love that about Reavis because it is different at our school; they do their jobs and care a lot were as at Permian they don't really care and, like it said in the book, they usually just end up watching movies instead of teaching their students. I would rather go to Reavis because it is a school that isn't just worried about football.
Teachers do a really good job at teaching here at Reavis thats why if you asked students from both schools that really do care about their academics whould choose Reavis, Unlike Permians their so into football that spend more $ than in school.
I agree with this. It's the students that make it seem as if the teachers don't teach. The teachers do an excellent job teaching. If all we did was watch movies, no one would learn anything, because they would be tired of watching the movies all day. I think Reavis does a great job tying movies with a lesson.
That is a good point. The teachers at reavis bend over backwards to help their students get their grades up. I also have many teachers that teach bell to bell with no left over time for socialization or "homework time". Reavis and IHSA also have the eligibility rules that make sure athletes must keep their grades up. In this way, I think that Reavis and Permain are complete opposites.
The teachers at Reavis are amazing compared to some other schools. Our staff DOESNT want you to fail or just barely pass to get you out of thier classroom. They want you to learn and be able to prove that their time and yours was worth sitting in a class for however long and haing them teach you as much as they could.
i think reavis is better than Permian academic wise, but at sports i think Permian is way better. the teachers seem to care more about the students here at reavis but at permian they just seem to really care alot about sports.
i agree with mike teachers at reavis help you out in ram. where at permian I don't think they even ever mentioned anything about after school programs helping students with there grades. Teachers at permian also are racist and say if a football player doesnt make it to the pros thats it for them cause they dont have anything else especially in the academic side of college. where at reavis they wouldnt even let you play sports especially if your a senior with freshman classes.
I agree with Ramiro. The teachers at Reavis actually do care. You can tell because most of them are just generally interested about how you might be doing inside or outside of school.
I agree that teachers care about students at Reavis but teachers at Permian are also very caring, just for different reasons. It's also unfair to say that Permian is way better than Reavis at sports because we only know of Permian's football program. I find Reavis to have a balanced approach to academics and sports and I think that's what makes it a better all around school.
I think what ever school you go to Reavis or Permian, it's always going to be up to the students whether they choose themselves to get a better education or not. For example in the second part of chapter 7 it describes Brian Chavez and how he does in school. He's in honors classes and he works hard in school because he understand that football might not be the only way to live the rest of his life.
EXACTLY! The same thing goes for the cheerleaders at school. No matter what school the cheerleader went to, they choose whether they become brainless social robots. It is ultimately up to a person what path they choose in life. Unfortunately, some choose more beaten paths rather than the isolated one.
I think that Reavis and Permian are simliar and different in many ways. Permian, obviously, takes a lot of pride in thier football team and any athletic prgram they have. They treat thier "golden" athlete's like kings and let them stomp around doing whatever they please. At Reavis, more kids care about making honor roll than Varsity. I think that says a lot. Not saying that our athletics aren't good, they are, we just take more pride in being smart than other things.
Reavis and Permian have several differences, for example Permian focuses on football an only football. While they don't really care about your grades. Reavis is the other way around they focus on grades and leave sports second, teachers and after school programs help you keep your grades up where at Permian they don't care about students falling.
Permian is completley different then reavis. Growing up you always here about football players getting the royal treatment at school. They get to go do whatever they want. Go to class late, not having to hand in homework, doing bad in class but still getting good grades. Here are reavis its nothing like that. Football players are just normal people with normal treatment.
Also another reason why the players are so popular is because in small towns like permian there isn't much to do so the only great entertainment is on Friday nights. The players are considered like pro teams. They're what people look forward to watching and all the talk around town.
At work earlier I came across a fairly giant 15 year old kid who Permian would love to enroll into their football program for the fact that he had a menacing attitude and expects special treatment. In my case, I'd much rather stay in Reavis. Reavis has the activities and sports and academics with the right staff to help you succeed. Becoming a Reavis Ram definitely has more perks future wise; becoming a Permian Panther does too, but only if you are a great football player.
Reavis is a completely different school than Permian. You could tell from the beginning that Permians has massive amounts of pride for there football team, which is good. But at Permian they don't pay any attention to most students grades what so ever. Reavis focuses on getting students an education because unlike the mindset of some Permian students people at Reavis know that they can't rely on football to make it in life. It is the values football teaches you that you should carry with you in life.
