Role Models

Should professional athletes be held to a higher standard than the rest of society because of the influence they could have on young people?

  1. I think professional athletes should be held for a higher standard because they really don't have that much responsibilities. Also most athletes usually have kids but then they go out and party a lot and don't realize that they have kids. For people like us who aren't famous we go through harder things then athletes and it's basically not fair so i do think athletes should be held for higher standards.

    1. Not all athletes go out and party. Many of the athletes who party, are usually the bachelors and are single with no wife or children. People who video tape athletes and celebrities partying only catch them when they are out of control. When they aren't recorded, that is when they are calm and not going crazy in the clubs or bars.

    2. I agree with Oscar on the fact that professional athletes don't have many responsibilities. They should set the right example. They live a life of luxury while you have some people out there are struggling to survive. They could at least do that for their fans.

    3. I disagree with Oscar. You can't say they don't have that much responsibility just because they're famous. You never know what goes on in their personal life. You just hear what the journalist say. I think they should be set as role models. They show people what determination, hard work, and team work is. No one is perfect. And no one said that a role model had to be perfect. A role model is just someone you can look up to and admire what they do. And I think some athletes are great role models.

  2. I think that not all athletes should be held for higher standards because there are athletes who are responsible and some that aren't. I want the irresponsible athletes to have higher standards because sometimes it looks like they don't care about their kids but only fame and publicity. It made me think about the story about Rae corruth and how he tried to kill his own unborn child. We want our human rate to grow and that's why athletes to be held for higher standards.

  3. I think not only athletes but everyone should be held to very high standards. Not everyone looks up to an athlete, many people look up to local heroes such as firefighters or police officers. When athletes do something wrong or inappropriate the media blows it out of proportion and makes the athlete look bad because they are famous. I mean extremes like Rae Carruth took it too far and nobody should look up to him.

    1. I also agree with John. Everyone should have high standards. But some people just look at some of the things they do not everything they do. Some people can look up to an athlete just because they like how they push themselves and makes them wants to push theirselves.

    2. Yes i agree john athletes aren't the only ones that have high standards to live up to just because they are professional athletes. The people around you in your community should be held to high standards because they are going to have the most effect on youth around.

    3. I agree with you so much john its amazing. Its like your reading my mind.Im sick of people talking about a professional athlete doing something bad and criticizing him without knowing the truth. But if soemone from there very own community does that very same thing and doesnt get criticized as much simply because their not famous is ridiculous.

  4. I agree with John. Everyone should be held to high standards. A person is a person regardless of their occupation. Not all people are athletes or look up to athletes. For instance, say someone was dedicated to broadway, and an amazing broadway actor/singer was their hero. That broadway star would not be a publicized as an athlete would, but they should still have the same consequences because they too have a strong influence on young people. With that said, the person doesn't even have to be famous to influence young minds. Parents, siblings, teachers, they are all influences that should be held to a high standard as should everyone.

    1. Exactly! Professionals in general, no matter what the occupation, should have higher standards and should expect to become a role model to someone sooner or later. In contrary, people like ourselves, should have the better judgement and know that everyone is human and not everyone is perfect.

  5. I think that the professional athletes should be held to a higher standard. Everyone can see what they are doing. When children watch their favorite athlete, they want to be just like them. When that athlete goes and does something that is inappropriate, the children then start to think that it is okay to do that. Usually, it's not okay for anyone to do that.

    1. I agree with Jamie. It sets a bad example for younger children. If they watch their favorite player do it then what is going to stop then from thinking it is okay?

    2. But why not hold everyone to those standards? How is being a professional athlete any different than being a role model parent?
Everyone should step up and strive to be a role model for someone.

    3. I agree, but why can't people analyze the situation or action the athlete made and decide for themselves whether or not you as an individual should be imitating that action. Putting all the blame on the athlete just teaches the kid that he isn't responsible for himself and he or she will point fingers whenever they do something wrong.

  6. I think professional athletes should be held to a higher standard. They get to play a sport that they love for a living. There lives aren't very hard. They get paid millions of dollars and the least they could do is act the right way. Some kids look up to athletes as their role models. What example would they be setting for younger kids if they get caught with drugs or anything illegal? It means a lot to some children when they watch thrir favorite player and if something bad like that were to happen it would the kids would start to think it is okay to misbehave.

    1. I agree that they should be held to higher standards, but I do not believe you have the right to judge whether or not their lives are hard. Making money doesn't mean your life is easy. Granted they don't have financial problems like most of us, but I am positive that they have conflicts and hardships just as we do.

  7. I think some athletes are stupid and should have low standards because you hear a lot of times that a player gets a DUI or gets caught with drugs just bad decision making that gets them in trouble with the law. Like Michael Vick is a very good example dog fighting seriously? Your making millions and this is what your doing?

    1. I don't agree with that for the fact that some people make bad choices and pay for it so they end up learning from their mistakes. I think that also they should be held up to a high standard because of being role models for younger kids.

  8. Honestly, I think that they should be help to a higher standard because not only do they play for themselves but I'm sure they play for a more personal reason. It might not always be the case but some professional athletes want their 'story' or real reason behind playing to be out in the open so they can influence others.
So if there making the wrong choices I think they should put themselves in the spot that younger people are in when they look up to them.

  9. In my opinion, I believe that professional athletes can be the most influencial role model on a teens life. Athletes are always the center of attention whether it be in the newspaper, tv, and more importantly the internet where a great percentage of teens spend most of their day on.Let me put it this way,say for example my role model athlete is Derrick Rose and I read about him getting a DUI, than me still being young and immature will go out and do the same thing thinking its all right. But if i see an article of how Derrick helps out the community, that would encourage me to help out my community.

    1. Just because Rose gets a DUI, it doesnt mean you should i would think someone as smart as you would know.

    2. Yosh, it doesnt have to specifically be a DUI.But if i see Derrick getting one, it will give me the mind-set of F-It, if hes getting one and hes a celebrity than whats the big deal of me getting one.

    3. I agree with Hammad. They are the ones who are out there, setting examples. They should be setting good ones, not bad. They shouldn't just think about themselves when doing things, they should think of the people they influence. Their actions influence everyone, just because they are professional and famous.

    4. Well, just becasuse Rose "gets a DUI" I don't think everyone will go running around drving drunk.

  11. I believe all people should be living with high standards and principles. Just because you're an athlete you should not be expected to be some sort of perfect person, who never makes mistakes. This is just impossible. I'm not saying that athletes have the right to do whatever they want because they aren't above the laws that the rest of us have to follow. People need to understand that they're human, and with the constant pressure on and off the field it's forgivable if they mess up.

  12. Professional athletes should most definitely be held up to a higher standard than the rest of the society just due to the fact that they have so much national, if not international, exposure. Living in a monkey see, monkey do world, young people all over would most likely mimic their idol. I know that I try to model my basketball offensive post plays on the new Los Angeles Lakers' C, Dwight Howard. In the same way, I model my "off the court" plays to a retired player who is very well respected, Magic Johnson. Lets say I modeled my "off court" etiquette after Metta World Peace (aka Ron Artest). I would most definitely be a menace on and off the field, and not in a good way.

  13. I think that they should be because they a role models for little kids, And most of them grow up and tell you oh he was my role model and this or that and then they realize he is a bad guy. Because he made bad decisions or did something wrong. I think not all are bad or do wrong but they should know their self and that they need to have high standards.

  14. I agree with Oscar because i think especially that athletes have no responsiblys and all they do is go out with friends and party like they have no lives and forget that they are married, well we as people have more to worry about and really care about our family's. That club stuff doesn't work out after you get married cause you have more important things to worry about.

  15. They should be able to do as they please because they have worked hard enough for it. Talent comes with responsibility.
